STAGE FEAR!
You heard it right!
We all have been through this fear in our lives, be it whether public speaking or Dance competitions or any place where we are required to face a large number of people. I still hold the fear even after 10 years of experience but I can definitely say its not the same when I started Dancing. It has gradually subsided as my confidence grew in the past so many years where I kept on challenging myself to overcome this fear. Today, I can honestly say that my confidence level is much more than my nervousness because of my experience and the challenges which I can kept on taking up to overcome my stage fear.
As we are evolving as a major online Dance education platform in India, I would like to help all those people as well who are just starting up with their dancing career and have a fear of performing on stage. Here, I am sharing few tips on how you all can improve your confidence level which will gradually subside your fear of performing on stage.
TIP 1: KEEP DRILLING HARD!
Trust me, it works!
I didn’t have had any experience of performing on stage except for 2-3 of them which I did at Dance competitions that was held during college festivals and that too, group performances. I would have hardly done 1-2 solo performances but as a showcase during society functions or other events in our locality.
Performing at World Hip-Hop Dance championship was my first ever legitimate competition along with a troupe of experienced dancers and me being the least experienced of all of them but one thing I always is used to follow is a proper practice method. I used to keep on drilling our choreography routines like thousand times till it wasn’t registered in my muscle memory. I used to make it a habit in such a way that my body automatically started executing the choreography in co-ordination with the music and that’s how I helped myself in bringing down my stage fear with increase in confidence level. So, always remember to prepare well for any competition which will really help in giving better performances.
TIP 2: TRY EXPLORING DIFFERENT PLACES
Keep exploring by practicing on different areas. This will give you an idea of different types of floors which will further help you to be prepared to perform on any type of the flooring. Performing in different places will also give you an idea of different surface areas which will help you in optimizing your performance and making necessary adjustments. You will definitely get accustomed to different types of spaces that will really help in getting you ready at your actual show day.
TIP 3: GET SUPPORT FROM FAMILY & FRIENDS
Before performing at your main day, start by performing in front of people whom you trust the most, people who have been support system of your life. Performing in front of your family and friends can really help you a lot in gaining confidence. Some of them can be your best critics as well who will help you in providing constructive feedback which really help in improving your performance. It is always good to ask for feedback so that you can get an understanding on which all areas you are really need to work to improve your showcase.
TIP 4: OVERCOME YOUR FEAR OF BEING JUDGED
Every artist has different approach of showing their art which is not forced by any rules and regulations to showcase his/her talent. Consider yourself to be unique as an artist, so take out the fear of being judged by just being yourself. Remember, you dance for your happiness and passion. Just give your best by being in the moment.
I hope all of these tips to helps you all to overcome your fear of performing on stage and please note that these are some of my experiences which I have shared with you all. Every individual have their own way of overcoming their stage fright and with experience you all can also start finding your own methods to tackle this challenge.
