Hello IDALites!

Hope your dancing is going great like always!

The main purpose of coming up with this blog is to share some knowledge on all those terms which we hear frequently during our dance classes from our instructors. I will try to simplify it in the easiest way possible and will keep sharing such concepts commonly associated with Dance.

In this blog, we will try to understand the concept of Accents & Textures which are the general terms which we use in our life and how are we applying those terms especially in Dance.

Let us start with Accent first. Accent is the commonly used word during our verbal communication or I would say when we are under going any spoken language training. Each individual has their own way of speaking any particular language. For example, my of way of speaking Hindi or English would be completely different than my counterparts. This difference which we encounter between the individuals while speaking any language is what we term as Accent. Similarly, in Dance, we make use of this term to apply it on any particular step or movement which we execute while giving emphasis on any beat or count.

Accents are actually a vast concept in music but as a dancer, we are just understanding it from Dance perspective. So, in Dance, we can define it as a movement performed in such a way as to give emphasis on the music. It is present in music and to justify them, dancers emphasize a certain movement based on how we interpret the music. Two Dancers performing the same step in their own respective way on the same beat or count without changing the timing is what we term as two different accents of those dancers while executing the same step or move. Hope this clear the concept of Accent which we commonly use it during our training in Dance.

Now, we hop on to Textures. Textures are the way in which we feel a particular move or how our body appears while dancing. It's basically one way of showing your body language while performing any move. We can also emphasize it as the quality of your movement or the appearance of your body when you progress from one move to the other. Textures is the simplest of them all and I hope you were able to understand this concept easily.

We have also come up with a detailed video explaining you both the concepts on our YouTube channel. Let's have a look into it through the following link - Accents & Textures in Dance
